Our Summer Shoot

Here are the first batch of pictures from our Summer shoot by Clare Foxcorft-Williams. If you'd like to see more of them, like our Facebook page and you will spot them as they go up.

This was such a fun shoot and I think that really shows. The models are all HelloAgain/Fittees staff, bar one. Sino Swartbooi and Kenan Tatt are working the shop over the busy season, Trynity Silk, although no longer working for us, is a long standing Hello Again representative who's worked both in the shop, and at the Fittees Factory, same goes for Stephen Savage, who is back in town for a few months from America. Kelly Egan is a good friend who happens to work at the awesome Dr Pachanga clothing store at the 210 on Long Mall. Clare, who also works at the shop, is becoming our unofficial official photographer, is always initiating shoots and coming up with new concepts.

As much as I would like to say that I styled the shoot, it would be a lie. I just gave general direction as to what to put together, with a lot of input from the girls, but they very much made the look their own by styling everything the way they would wear it. Which is precisely the Hello Again ethos. I don't want to prescribe how our clothes should be worn - that is why I love this shoot so much - let the models ( who are luckily incredibly stylish), dress themselves according to their personalities.

This must have been the 6th or 7th shoot I've done for Hello Again, and I am loving the process of evolution that's happening on so many levels.

Project Happy Feet

Today I met with Astrid from Boheme, at her busy shoe making studio in Seapoint. We are working on some fabric belts for Hello Again. Think big bows, stripes, colours, textures, asian style wrap around belts, vintage buckles and fine finishes. Can't wait to show you the samples.

While I was there I noticed these beauties (below), and so Astrid told me about the Happy Feet Project. This is a project she started through FEET Charity, and the aim is to make beautiful, handmade leather "Veldskoene" for the disadvantaged children that FEET are involved with. What I find so wonderful is that the children get to design their own shoes.

Astrid and Farieda take the children's drawings and turn them into the most gorgeous shoes.

Of course this wonderful project needs financial backing, so if you like what they are doing, you can sponsor a child a pair of dream shoes for R100.

Lucky Pony Portrait Project

The Lucky Pony Portrait Project is a fun little exercise, where bloggers were paired up by Angie, from Lucky Pony to make portraits of each other.

I only found out about it way after the deadline, which made me kinda sad, but when Janece from Vintage Lover tweeted that her partner had pulled out, I leaped at the chance to be her replacement partner. It was so much fun drawing Janece and her gorgeous man, Julian. It just made me realise once again how much I enjoy drawing and that I really want to do it more.

Because we started so late, and also because we both live in Cape Town, so we didn't have to post ours, we were able to extend our deadline a bit, and exchanged our portraits personally at the City Bowl Market, where she sells vintage clothing.

I am so lucky - Janece has not only made the most delightfully sweet and pretty portrait of me and my puppy Soekie, (ooh, how I love the patterns!) she has also made me the happiest girl in the land by adding some vintage love. Not only did I get a pretty vintage blouse in one of my favourite colours and a frame pendant, but also a seriously awesome printed silk scarf. How did you know that I love scarves, Janece? You must have been following me around town, checking out my wardrobe! And, of course the package was completed by some trademark Vintage Lover fizzers. :-)

Rock Paper Scissors

I finally got around to visiting this gem of a vintage store today. Rock Paper Scissors in Bree street, is full of wonderful vintage treasures. Jodi Meiring sources clothing, accessories, toys, ceramics and lots of other little bits and pieces form all over. The shop is beautifully put together. The vintage display cases make everything inside seem so much more precious.

I was also very taken with the cute owls, bunnies and cushions, all made from old dresses that haven't sold. I love this kind of upcycling.

If you like scarves as much as I do, check out their overwhelming assortment of printed silk scarves. I couldn't leave without one.

The location, at 120 Bree street, makes it a bit of a destination shop, so make the effort, it's totally worth it, and while you're there why not have a cold one at &Union. There is also something very exciting happening just across the road - rumour has it you'll soon see a very cool eatery there.

Our busy season is almost here, and we are hard at work getting ready to make the most of it. For starters, we are employing more staff, so that we now have two shop assistants working every day, to better be able to help you shop, and to manage our bigger store. (And to keep and eye out for shoplifting.) The first new face is that of Sino, an Integrated Brand Communication student at Vega, and one stylish lady. Welcome to our shop, Sino!

We'd also like to announce our new trading hours. From 1 November we will be open from 9:00 - 19:00 during the week, and from 10:00 - 17:00 on Saturdays. That gives you much more time to get to us!

For the first time ever we are having a new logo professionally designed,and we asked "maker of things" extraordinaire, Lauren Fowler, to do the job. We are bursting with excitement to see what she will come up with. Just look at her cool website, and you will know why.

Other things in the pipeline include new and more fitting rooms, more rail space, more ladies stock and new styles, possibly another new staff member, better displays and new accessories. I will also be spending a lot of time working on a new window display that might just blow your minds if it ends up looking like the picture I have in my mind.

Twelve Vintage Handbags

I am thrilled to be in the possession of twelve exquisite vintage handbags, which I am selling to raise money for a fund created for a friend who was involved in an accident that's left her quadriplegic.

These bags are all from the collection of her handbag-addicted mother-in-law, bought on her travels abroad, meticulously stored, and mostly very rarely used, if ever. There are some real treasures here, each of which I am hoping to find a very appreciative new owner for.

We are in the process of moving Hello Again into a brand new space, only three shops down from our old spot. Our new shop is much bigger and has a lovely storefront and pretty windows to play with. The ancient mishmash of exposed brickwork is a big feature too.

Please be patient, we will probably be trading like normal by the weekend, albeit without a credit card machine, so remember to bring some cash. We will be making things look better and better over the next few weeks, and maybe we will be ready to show off our new, grown up shop in November, by hosting another party.

Spring Launch

Our Spring window display

Last week I did a new display in our little window. These pictures were taken at twilight, after hours, so it's not too clear what the models are wearing. I love the gold vinyl. The bunting was specially made for us by Leila from Bow Peep, who is one of our accessories suppliers. (We have some brand new stock by the way!). If I can get my hands on some synthetic grass that's not too expensive, I will add that to the window too.

The one where Lynne knits a sock to keep a pillar warm

Here's one for all the crafty girls out there. And the rest of you, you might just learn about something quite cool. Yarn bombing, or knit graffiti, has been around for a while, if you'd like to find out more, this Wikipedia page has some great links and images. We have some local bombing ladies too - check out Isabeau Joubert, Lauren Fowler and Jesse Breytenbach's contributions.

I decided to cover one of the pillars in front of Hello Again, using single jersey ( t-shirt fabric) strips. Because we make and sell t-shirts, clever, huh? I used some big ass knitting needles, and it was ready to go onto the pillar in no time.

So on Friday, during a gap in the rain, with assistance from my lovely crew, Trynity, Clare, Reuben and a friendly passing Rastafarian, that pillar got it's warm sock on. What a fun little project.

That piece sticking out at the bottom is a nylon ribbon with 'Hello Again' embroidered in yellow, just so there's a connection to the shop.

This week, meet Clare. We are lucky to have her not only as a shop assistant, but you could say that she is our official photographer too. She's done most of our recent fashion shoots, and just finished a whole lot of new images for the Fittees website. Great work, you'll agree. Aside from being a wonderfully creative photographer, passionate about making her subjects look beautiful, she is most kind and sweet and a real asset to us behind the counter at Hello Again.

How did it happen that you started working at Hello Again?
I had visited Trynity at the shop a few times before work, and in
February she asked if I could help out at the shop. I said yes and
here I am!

What is the best thing about working at Hello Again?
The way the staff feels like a family and the fact that Toby and Lynne
commission my photography work from time to time. It's great to have
an opportunity to use my more practiced skills, not just operate a
till!

And is there anything you don't like about it?
Rude people who get upset that we don't stock the obscure things they
want, and the skelms who try and steal stuff! Oh, and people who walk
past and ring the gate's bicycle bell!

What is your favourite product at Hello Again?
The small run of Ladies hoodies that came out a little while back.
Perfect fit and nice and warm... I pretty much live in mine!

Who are your favourite Long street characters?
Leonard was my favourite when he was still around. But Coco and the
transvestite gang are pretty entertaining!

What do you do when you are not at the shop?
I'm a photographer, shooting mostly portraits and musicians/bands, and
a little bit of fashion. (Sweet Nausea Photography) So I spend my
spare hours planning,shooting and retouching. I also help out at an
awesome photographic art gallery in Woodstock called Museum.

What would you be doing every day if money was never an object?
Shooting as much as possible, getting tattooed and going on tour with
bands. And I'd have more rabbits and a ton of cats. I'm a bit of an
old lady like that.

Do you stand for/ feel strongly about anything? or is there anything
close to your heart you'd like to share here?
I feel very strongly about breast cancer awareness,as I lost my mother
to cancer in 2006.
I also feel strongly about standards in body modification and get
upset when I see really shoddy tattoo parlours with dodgy artists and
bad hygiene practices.

What is your preferred/ most used mode of transport? I get lifts, take the train and walk.

What is your weekend fun?
Usually shooting or retouching. I also shoot live bands every now and
then. Otherwise relaxing and sleeping in. I savour the opportunity to
sleep late!

Here is another quick little interview, this time with one of our oldest and dearest staff members, Trynity Silk. She really is like family to us, and we are so glad she's decided stick with us while pursuing her music and acting career. She has loads of integrity, is loyal, gentle and sweet, but also resilient and independent. And she is super creative and resourceful. Ooh, so many adjectives, I'll stop gushing now. Here she is:

How did ithappen that you started working at Hello Again?

I first came across the Groenewald’s in2009 when I’d just moved Cape Town from Durban, hardly knew anyone at all anddesperately needed someone to take me under their wing. Lynne and Toby didn’thesitate. Hello Again and Fittees put bread and butter on the table andprovided me with a family away from home J

What is the bestthing about working for Hello Again/Fittees?

I work with people who care about me as anindividual. There’s nothing better than that. It’s like working with yourfamily, I know I am appreciated by people who want to see me grow. I also getto meet people everyday which is great.

Favourite product atHA?

The flared skirt is my favouriteproduct, I guess it’s what suits mypersonality and dress sense the most.

Which Long street characters do you find most interesting?

The trannies are always entertaining, butthere are also a lot of crazy homeless people who have a lot to shout about.Having moved to Fittees, I really miss the friends I made in the surroundingshops. The guys at revolution and A-list in particular J

What do you do whenyou are not working?

I play the trumpet in a post rock,instrumental band called We Set Sail. I am also part of a creative project withmy mum called Tryn-Ella, basically we make things that make us happy in the hopesof selling them to people and making them happy! J

What would you bedoing every day if money was never an object?

Today we had our family hair appointment, and I thought it would be nice to share this gem of a salon with you guys. I'm sure many of you will recognise that it's in Hope street, just across the street from St Mary's Cathedral. It's called Blow Up Hair Design, and your man there is the brilliant Jerome Jonas, who is probably the most meticulous and perfecting styler and cutter of all kinds of hair I've had the privilege to be attended by. I mean, he actually cuts Tobie's notoriously wayward hair into such sexy styles every single time.

So now the Groenewalds have great hair again, and by the way that picture of me is before the haircut, I look even more gorgeous now. Yip. Thanks Jerome and Zelda, see soon!

I think it's about time I introduced you to some of the good people who keep the the Hello Again motor running so very smoothly. First up is Tecla Ciolfi, our resident Italian girl, fondly known to most as Texx. She is one of our shop assistants and one of the friendly faces you will encounter in store. There is no job she will shun, and she attacks each task with great enthusiasm... even when she's only had a few hours' sleep, which is often the case. ( You'll see why when you read her interview). Very professional is our Texx.

Firstly, how did it happen that you started working at Hello Again?

I needed something to do during the day that would keep me out of trouble, naturally, I deduced that working in Long Street would be my best bet.

What is the best thing about working here?

The general, casual vibe of the shop. And of course, the customers who skip the fitting room and strip in the middle of the shop.

Is there anything you don't really enjoy?

I could do without the shoplifters. They're a major fail. It helps that I've worked on Long Street for 4 years though, so I know who the dodgy ones are.

What is youf favourite product at Hello Again?
The "Real Ninjas Don't Rap" Tee. Too classic.

Who are the most interesting Long street character/s?
The trannies. Coco is my favourite.

What do you do when you are not at the shop?
I'm the editor of a free monthly music magazine called Your LMG, I run a music/entertainment blog called Texx and the City and I'm a freelance journalist. I also like to indulge in a spot of drinking every now and again, and again...

What would you be doing every day if money was never an object?
I'd live my life from one huge music festival to the next. Travelling around the world indulging in my favourite bands/artists? Hells yes!

Is there anything close to your heart you'd like to share here?
The gap between the haves and the have nots in this country is ridiculous, but I never rant over politics and I'm not about to start here.

What is your preferred/ most used mode of transport?
I walk everywhere.

What is your weekend fun?

I'm usually at a gig or in front of my laptop drunkenly tweeting. Otherwise you'll find me chilling with the Italians - aka my extended family.

A wonderful thing happened yesterday - we bought some stock from Bow Peep by Leila Badsha. These covered button earrings, hair clips and brooches are simply perfect. You'll find stripes, florals, ginghams and graphic prints. I think they are adorable. To add to the excitement of buying stock, Leila gave me and Clare each a gift of our choice. Especially great is the fact that they've used Salvo's very first fixie bike, and on the intro page no less.

An orange bike

We see many bikes coming into bike friendly Hello Again. This orange ride came in on Saturday morning and caught our eye. Its a very comfy looking bicycle with 24inch wheels and coaster brake. It was bought for a few hundred bucks and restored in total for R2000. It just goes to show that one can create something unique and useful as a bicycle at a fraction of the price of a new one.

Yes, we are still here... We've only been so quiet on the internet because we've been so busy with real work!

Like making our new window display and finally getting around to installing last week. I think it's looking kinda cool, but just keep your eyes on that window in the months to come - it's going to get better and better. On the inside of the window, and not very visible on the photo, there are a bunch of suspended wooden birds, seagulls in fact. They were meant to look like they were holding garments between them, but that didn't work so we scrapped that idea. The corner decorations are a copy of the broekie lace that adorns the pillars of our century old building.

Vintage Vixen

I've just met the coolest girl online. She's from Wellington and has an online thrift store called Vintage Vixen. Her name is Emma. She likes Hello Again, yay! Here is the Vintage Vixen story in Emma's own words:

"My inspiration for starting Vintage Vixen came from the "thrifting" trend that is really popular at the moment, and many blogs I follow, namely The Thrift Collection. I have a huge amount of vintage evening dresses and negligee that I inherited from my grandmother, some of which are too small for me or not really my style.

A lot of them are designer pieces from overseas, and I didn't want to just give them to the sad looking small town second-hand shop around the corner. I sat with my mother and she helped me price some of the more expensive clothes and accessories, and the rest of the things that I'm selling are my own second-hand clothes that I don't wear anymore. Occasionally I do go out looking for good quality "once-loved" items - we all know that feeling when you find a good bargain! I especially wanted to cater for young adults, I have a full time job at the moment but at the end of the day, after paying bills etc., I don't really have that much to spend on clothes and accessories. To me there is nothing wrong with wearing something that someone else used to covet. The way I see it, it gives the item another chance to flaunt itself :)"

Toffie was so wonderful. I only got to go to the exhibitions and the market, where we had a stall, but I left the City Hall feeling enriched.

Talking of City Hall - the venue was certainly the star of the festival in my mind. I've always been fascinated by this building, I used to go to the library when it was still housed there, just to wonder around and see what I could discover. Last year for the Spier exhibition many of the rooms got to wear new colours on their walls, and the charcoal, chocolate and teal still just looks amazing.

I loved the inspiration tables especially, to me there is just nothing that compares to the results you get when you give a bunch of creatives carte blanche to fill their own little space.

Everything was so beautifully curated, from the market to the coffee people ( Rosetta Roastery). Very well done to Marcii Goose for another job exellently pulled off.

On Sunday morning we attended the Cape Town Bull Run. A bunch of cyclists and skaters bombed down Long street - in the wrong direction. It all happened very fast, and Tobie reports to have witnessed at least 3 near accidents. Phew. Afterwards there was a raffle at Carnival Court Backpackers, where we sponsored some Salvo tees and Revolution, our neighbours gave away tees, sunnies and a deck. It was all over by 9am, and we were off for some breakfast.

Two huge events we are related to are happening tomorrow:

The long awaited and much hyped We Set Sail/Taxi Violence gig plays out tomorrow night at Mercury. These two bands together will be explosive. Don't miss history in the making - they will be collaborating on some songs too.

And then is time again for the Ultimate X, where our very own bmx/fixie brand Salvo wil be showing off their Parow made bikes and parts as well as some cool clothing. You are bound to witness some jaw dropping hugeness and hopefully some great style in the air courtesy of all those hot boys on bikes and boards.

So while we instruct Trynity to go 'break a leg' on stage, guys on those big jumps, we hope you won't.

As we all know, recycling is good for the environment, in this case, it could also be good for your pocket!

We are looking to buy your second hand tee shirts. We do have certain expectations however and ask that you only pass on your most awesome, retro style tees. We’re looking for interesting prints, cool unique band tee shirts, tees that you were once proud to walk around in and obviously good quality garments. PLEASE NOTE! No Mr Price, or Truworths or anything of that sort... we want real, original retro garments!

We are willing to pay you R60 a tee!

All you have to do is pop down to the shop, drop off your tee shirts and we will get back to you the very next day to let you know which ones we loved and want to welcome into our shop.

Whether you have always wondered how the images get onto t-shirts, or if you just want to have the the opportunity to print your own design, these workshops are great fun. The groups are small, and at the end you leave with your finished product. There will be more workshops throughout the year, so drop the boys and email if you'd like to be on their mailing list.

I Love Screen Printing is a small studio in Salt River that specialise in printing smaller runs of quality t-shirts and posters.

Tryn awestruck in Durban

Trynity is back from spending a week with her family in her hometown, Durban. While she was there, the rapper and poet Sage Francis happened to be in town too, and, being well connected, Tryn was able to not only attend two of his mind blowing gigs, but also to meet the man. She says his performance of Sea Lions was most wonderful.

I made it to the You & Me & Everyone We Know Night Market, and it was magical. Thanks to Marcii and Adele for organising it, and to all our supporters. The market has such a lovely atmosphere, not least because it is held at one of my favourite places in Cape Town, the Labia. Since Reuben's birth I haven't been out much, and I really enjoyed visiting one of my old haunts again after all this time. Reuben baby was fascinated by all the lights and people, remind me to take him on more of these outings!

From all of us at Hello Again,we thank you for your support throughout the year and we wish you a wonderful Christmas, if you are celebrating, and if not, have a great holiday!
